10 tricks for a successful first day of work

tricks first day on first job

Congratulations on a job and a new step in your life! It’s a pretty big deal! Probably it took some time to get all the pieces come together until you are able to get to the first day on the first job, perhaps in the company where you always wanted to work. However, when that day slowly approaches you are probably thinking about lots of things and have many questions.

Luckily we have prepared for you a 10 tricks for a successful first day of work to instantly show yourself in the best possible way:

1.    Be sure that everything you need to know , you already know. Do not worry too much about whether you have all the necessary knowledge and skills for the job position you are given. At the beginning, nobody will expect from you more than what you have learned in the school (university) or at your previous job. For everything else you will be thoroughly informed and trained during the time ahead.

2.    Good mood. If you are thinking what is necessary to take with you on your first day, certainly the most important and most effective thing is – good mood. Only after that, you can also bring a diary or a notebook with a pen.

3.    Break with colleagues. Avoid preparing your meal and bringing it from home, at least at first days. Certainly a better option is to go to lunch with colleagues and thus get a little more familiar with the collective.

4.    Clothing. All people are having the same dilemma – what to dress for the first day. If you were able to notice clothing style of other employees during the interview, you will have some advantage. And if not, classic clothing without any sort of exaggeration would be desirable. For men this includes proved combination of a shirt with long sleeves with trousers, and “casual” style shoes, while for women dresses to the knee or pants with a shirt are excellent choices. Note that you should avoid wearing sneakers, sandals, basic T-shirts (unless polos), too narrow and too short clothes. The most important thing is that the clothes are properly washed and ironed, as well as clean and not torn.

5.    Greetings and good manners. Do not forget to great others with “Good morning”, „Thank you“, „Pleased to meet you“, „After you“. Just start with saying your name and to getting to know the team. The first impression is very important.

6.    Do not overdo things. Body language and being relaxed are of course important to make it easier to establish communication, but if you exaggerate in this relaxed behaviour it could lead to bad impression. Therefore, keep a positive attitude and a smile, but also keep a certain amount of seriousness.

7.    Looking for directions. Your new employer will try to give you every instruction you need because you are in a new environment. But if they miss something, do not hesitate to ask for guidance, whether it refers to something like where is a kitchen, or the office with copier machines. It is certainly better to have the right information, then to  mistakenly take someone else’s cup or accidentally get into someone else’s office.

8.    Remember that you are at work, you are not at home. Take care not to „domastic“ yourself too much. Some things that some people mistakenly do, you should try to avoid. It can be, for example getting off your shoes at the workplace, loudly playing music, singing out loud, loudly conversating or arguing over the phone, watching movies and playing games at work (yes, even that happens sometimes).

9.    Caution. Do not try to apply all the rules you have read in some book or elsewhere, not even in this post. Many people try to blindly implement and adopt as more rules possible to guarantee the success, but it eventually can look artificial and give opposite effect then wanted. For example, we will point out that one of the recommendations is that one should observe the work environment and ask the questions. But that refers to  showing your interest in the job and about your new colleagues with aim to show the interest in the job and new colleagues. Of course, this applies to some meaningful questions for the current situation, rather than to merely ask questions and looking deep into their own colleagues, which leads to achieving the bad impression for no apparent reason. To sum up, all these rules are just guidelines that you can adopt, but not mandatory steps. Keep your attitude and express your personality.

10.  Do not be late. You must not be late, plan your trip to work ahead. You can get to work earlier, but always come in on time.

On the first day of work, everyone feels a bit of a pressure for preparation reasons and also a fear that something can go wrong, but when it is finished it is actually a nice experience, especially when it is a brand new start, a new page in your book. On the other hand, that’s the day you meet new, hopefully nice people, with whom you will be spending most of your hours in a day from now on.
