Roman Blinds: Advantages, Disadvantages & Maintenance Tips

Proper Roman blinds maintenance is essential if you want your window coverings to remain clean, elegant, and fully functional over time. In this article, we’ll cover the advantages and disadvantages of Roman blinds, as well as practical home care and washing tips to help you preserve them in top condition.

✅ Advantages of Roman Blinds

  • Flexibility – Roman blinds allow easy adjustment of light and privacy levels.

  • Aesthetic appeal – Available in a variety of colors, patterns, and materials, they suit almost any interior design.

  • Sophisticated design – Compared to zebra or Venetian blinds, Roman blinds appear more elegant and visually richer.

  • Easy maintenance – They can be washed in a standard washing machine, which makes them significantly more practical than zebra or Venetian blinds that cannot be machine washed.

  • Durable construction – With normal handling, Roman blinds do not wear out easily; their build is solid and not fragile, contributing to long-term use.

⚠️ Disadvantages of Roman Blinds

  • Stain-prone – In households with children or pets, they can become dirty quickly.

  • Prone to shrinking – Some materials may shrink if not washed according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  • Complex reinstallation – After washing, returning the blinds to their original setup may require more time and attention compared to simpler blinds.

  • Need for organization – When removing the rods, it’s important to keep track of which rod belongs to which blind, as each rod is tailored to a specific blind.

🫧 Roman Blinds Maintenance: Step-by-Step Washing Guide

Good Roman blinds maintenance starts with knowing how to clean them correctly. Here’s a simple method you can follow at home:

1. Preparing for the Wash

Detach the hook-and-loop (Velcro) tape and fully extend the blinds.

Untie the ribbons at the bottom.

Remove all rods from the fabric.

2. Machine Washing

Use a gentle cycle at 20°C for around 15 minutes.

Set the spin cycle to a low setting (around 400 RPM).

Use standard laundry detergent for colored fabrics and add fabric softener.

There’s no need for high heat or heavy-duty cycles to remove dust buildup.

3. For Deeper Stains

If there are stubborn stains (e.g., food stains), consult the seller before using stronger cleaning agents or programs. A spot cleaner may be sufficient for certain areas, but this depends on the type of fabric the curtain is made from.

4. Drying and Reinstalling

After washing, lay the curtains flat on a surface (e.g., bed) to prevent wrinkles. But do this only until you insert the rods, as the curtains will dry naturally once hung.

Insert the rods into the curtain and fold them into an “accordion” shape.

✍️ Roman Blinds Mounting instructions:

Option 1 – Hanging from the ceiling and threading through.

Attach the end of the curtain with the Velcro strip to the matching Velcro on the rail (on the ceiling). While standing on a chair or ladder, thread the straps through the plastic rings and tie them once you reach the last ring.

Option 2 – Pulling through on the floor or chair, then hanging.

Alternatively, if it’s easier for you: first place the folded “accordion” of the curtain on a ladder, chair, or a movable drying rack, then thread the straps all the way through the rings—from the Velcro end to the bottom rod. Once you reach the end, tie the straps. After all the straps are threaded, attach the Velcro on the curtain to the matching Velcro on the ceiling rail.

In the picture, we used window handles instead of a chair for support because the curtains were short.

5. Adjusting Length

Adjust the drop length by retying the ribbons.

For homes with children, tying the ends in a knot may help; they can be safely untied later with scissors.

6. If the Bottom Edge of the Blind Is Uneven

If the bottom rod is uneven — meaning the Roman blind appears crooked at the lower edge — this can be corrected by retying the bottom ribbon ends; as an extra tip, once you’ve set the desired length and achieved a straight horizontal line, mark the correct tying position on the ribbons near the last loop with a pencil, so the bottom edge stays even the next time you reassemble it.

📌Roman Blinds Without Drilling – What You Need to Know

Some Roman blinds are designed to be mounted without drilling into the window or door frame. These models use adjustable hooks that fit snugly depending on the frame’s thickness.

They’re ideal for rental properties or spaces where drilling is not an option. However, these types are usually more fragile — with thinner cords, softer rods, and more delicate pull systems — so extra care is needed during daily use.

The good news? Their maintenance routine is the same as standard Roman blinds.

✅Conclusion

Effective Roman blinds maintenance can significantly extend the life of your blinds, keeping them looking fresh and functioning properly. With regular washing and proper handling, there’s no need for costly professional cleaning or early replacement.

By following the steps outlined above, you’ll be able to handle Roman blinds maintenance like a pro — right from the comfort of your home.
